OVERVIEW
As development initiatives in Sub-Saharan Africa scale up, ensuring their environmental sustainability and social equity is paramount. This Masters Microcredential Certificate (MMC) provides professionals with critical knowledge and practical skills in environmental and social (E&S) safeguards. It focuses on integrating E&S considerations into project planning, implementation, and monitoring to promote sustainable development outcomes and minimise adverse impacts, with a strong emphasis on international best practices and the African context.
Target Audience
Development practitioners, project managers, environmental consultants, social development specialists, government officials (e.g., planning, environment, infrastructure), NGO staff, and professionals involved in infrastructure, agriculture, energy, and other development sectors.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this MMC, participants will be able to:
- Articulate the importance of environmental and social safeguards in sustainable development.
- Understand key international and national E&S safeguard policies and frameworks.
- Apply principles of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Social Impact Assessment (SIA).
- Develop strategies for managing involuntary resettlement and livelihood restoration.
- Design effective stakeholder engagement and grievance redress mechanisms.
- Formulate basic Environmental and Social Management Plans (ESMPs).
- Describe methods for monitoring, reporting, and auditing E&S performance in projects.
- Recognise ethical considerations and emerging issues in E&S safeguards.

The 20 postgraduate credit units earned from this Masters Microcredential Certificate in Environment and Social Safeguards for Sustainable Development are fully transferable and count directly towards Nexus International University’s NCHE-accredited MA in International Development or other relevant Master’s programs (e.g. MSc in Environmental Management or Sustainable Development). This provides a flexible and accelerated pathway for students wishing to pursue a full Master’s degree.
