Sustainable Transport and Mobility Research Unit

About this unit

The UN defines sustainable transport “as the provision of services and infrastructure for the mobility of people and goods – advancing economic and social development to benefit today’s and future
generations – in a manner that is safe, affordable, accessible, efficient and resilient; while minimizing carbon and other emissions and environmental impact.

SFI focuses its research on sustainable transport and mobility by examining low – and zero – emission, energy – efficient and affordable modes of transport, including electric and alternative – fuel vehicles, as well as domestic fuels. SFI also researches into the range of mobility trends, including shared mobility and providing affordable and sustainable mobility options for people in order to achieve global
sustainability goals. SFI research is committed to the principles of sustainable transportation, which includes minimising the generation of waste through each phase of the life – cycle of transportation vehicles, vessels and infrastructure, reduce, reuse and recycle. Ensue that the rate of use of renewable resources does not exceed rates of regeneration, and non – renewable resource use is minimized.
