The Bachelor of Arts in Social Work and Social Administration (BA SWSA) is a comprehensive program designed to cultivate skilled professionals dedicated to enhancing social well-being and addressing societal challenges. This interdisciplinary curriculum integrates core social work theories and methods with principles of social administration, policy analysis, and community development. Students delve into human behaviour, social justice, ethics, and the impact of socio-economic factors on individuals, families, and communities within the Ugandan context.
The program emphasises practical learning through fieldwork placements, enabling students to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings and develop essential intervention skills. Coursework covers areas such as case management, group work, community organizing, social policy formulation, project management, and research methodologies. Students learn to critically analyze social problems, advocate for vulnerable populations, and design and implement effective social programs.
Graduates of the BA SWSA program will be equipped to work in diverse settings, including government agencies, non-governmental organizations, community-based initiatives, healthcare facilities, and educational institutions. They will possess the skills to empower individuals, strengthen families, build resilient communities, and contribute to the development of just and equitable social systems. The program fosters critical thinking, ethical practice, and a commitment to lifelong learning in the dynamic field of social work and social administration.
At the end of this programme, graduates will be able to:
- Apply core social work theories and ethical principles to analyse complex social issues and inform culturally sensitive interventions within diverse contexts.
- Demonstrate proficiency in a range of social work methods and social administration skills, including assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation, and resource management.
- Critically analyze social policies and advocate for social justice and human rights, contributing to the development of more equitable and inclusive systems.
- Effectively communicate and collaborate with individuals, families, groups, communities, and other professionals in a respectful and empowering manner.
- Engage in reflective practice and utilize research skills to inform their work, promote evidence-based interventions, and commit to continuous professional development in the dynamic field of social work and social administration.
Applicants for the program shall be eligible for admission in the following ways:
- Direct Entry Scheme
Applicants shall satisfy the general minimum entry requirements stipulated by National Council for Higher Education (NCHE). Candidates seeking admission through this avenue must have obtained: –
- The Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) with at least six credits of which two credits must be in English and Mathematics.
- The Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) with at least two Principal Passes obtained at the same sitting, which passes must include one of the subjects such as Mathematics and Physics, or its equivalence from UNEB or a legitimate national authority.
- Foreign students without UACE or its equivalent qualifications, who have successfully completed secondary school education and are admissible to university degree or diploma programmes in their respective home countries. Such students shall have passed at least five subjects with a minimum overall grade of C (Plain). In addition, foreign students whose studies were not conducted in English shall show proof of proficiency in the English Language.
- Diploma Entry Scheme
Candidates seeking admission through the Diploma holder’s Scheme must:
- Have passed Mathematics and English with at least a credit in the Uganda Certificate of Education or its equivalent
- Have done a combination involving such as Mathematics and Physics, or their equivalent at UACE and passed at least one of the subjects at Principle level
- Have obtained a diploma or its equivalent qualification (at credit/distinction level) in the relevant field from a recognized higher institution of learning.
- Mature Age Entry
The applicant must have passed Mature Age Entry Examinations (with at least 50%) of any institution dully authorized by the NCHE to issue such examination. For purposes of admission the Mature Age Entrance Certificate shall be valid for no more than two years.
