Background
The Professional Master’s Executive Programme (PMEP) is designed for very busy professionals who do not have time to go through the duration of a Master’s programme but, need the knowledge required to operate at the corporate executive management level. NIU PMEP programmes are designed to deliver cognate theory with best practice case studies to enhance the knowledge and competence of our trainees.
PROGRAMME AREAS
There are currently six specialisation areas on offer: Climate, Environment & Sustainability; Corporate Management; Human Resource Management; Financial Management; Sustainable City and Metropolitan Governance and, Public Administration & Management.
Climate, Environment, & Sustainability
The protection of the environment is now an integral part of the fabric of society and has become a concern in every aspect of how we advance, develop and interact with the environment. Professions that previously had little or only peripheral involvement in environmental issues such as planners, solicitors, architects, mechanical and structural engineers are now required to interact with environmental scientists and civil engineers in order for their work to meet legal and regulatory requirements that did not exist a decade ago.
This is, therefore, a multidisciplinary training programme. It covers a wide spectrum of topics that relate to sustainability, the knowledge and skills required to address environment and sustainability issues across a broad range of activities. It also delivers new knowledge in the field of sustainable technologies and the environmental impacts. The training course content has been designed taking on board the training and information needs of all sectors.

The PMEP in HRM is designed with your career in mind – opening up a wider range of job opportunities by providing the skills and practice to either accelerate your career or prepare you for a new start.

It also includes applying management principles to the financial assets of an organisation, while also playing an important part in fiscal management.

The aim is to develop knowledge and understanding of the role and objectives of financial management within an organisation, to ensure that students can apply judgement and appropriate techniques in financial management decisions.
Sustainable City and Metropolitan Governance
The PEMP in Sustainable City and Metropolitan Governance will examine the principles and practices of sustainable development in the context of city and metropolitan development. Globally, cities are home to 54 percent of the world’s population, and by the middle of this century that figure will rise to 66 percent (UN Habitat, 2016).
Cities provide many socioeconomic benefits. By concentrating people, investment and resources, cities, with economy of scales, improve the possibilities for economic development, innovation and social interaction. Cities also make it possible to lower unit costs to provide public services such as energy, water and sanitation, health care, education, emergency services and public recreational areas. However, with rapid urbanisation, cities face environmental, economic and social challenges that pose threats to sustainability of urban prosperity.

Public Administration and Management
The PMEP programme in Public Administration and Management offers an applied, problem-solving based approach, blending new theoretical developments and practice, with a view to managing public policies locally and globally.
The programme aims to provide trainees with the practical tools and the academic knowledge that public policy managers need to implement effectively and successfully achieve their agendas. It covers the organisation of government departments and agencies, the management of programmes designed to implement policy, and the behaviour and responsibilities of ‘civil servants’ and officials who are responsible for those policies and programmes. It considers government decision making, how and why policies are developed, and analysis of them.
