About the MSc in ICTs for Development

The MSc in ICTs for Development train innovative ICTs leaders with a thorough knowledge of the theories and methods of ICTs for development who will think outside of the box to maximize the use of ICTs in different contexts. In today’s digital era, Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) are the key driver of almost everything. From education, to health, governance, business, tourism and all other sectors of any economy, ICTs acts as a vehicle for change. We can apply ICT4D in various ways to assist both governmental and non-governmental organizations to improve socio-economic conditions in developing countries. ICTs can provide a useful tool for sustainable development and an absolute need in emergency situations. However, there is a notable lack of capacity especially in developing countries to develop, maintain and use ICTs resources. This could be one cause of failure of ICTs projects. This postgraduate programme encouraging our students to think outside of the traditional ICTs box while embedding ICTs in the whole area of development theory and praxis to:  

  • understand the contextual frameworks of development in all aspects
  • understand how ICTs impact on development
  • to link development theory with ICTs practice
  • have the knowledge to engage critically with the role of ICTs in development
  • be familiar with the key debates in ICTs for Development
  • have a thorough insight into the application of ICTs in different sectors such as education, health and finance
  • gain practical skills to handle ICTs for Development driven projects such as sound project planning and management and stakeholder analysis
  • gain skills to adapt new upcoming ICT tech novations to local conditions.

 

What you’ll learn in the MSc in ICTs for Development

In this programme, you will take 10 modules each weighted at 4 or 5 Credit Units and write a MSc dissertation worth 12 Credit Units in the specific area of ICTs for Development. You are free to take a minimum of 1 module to a maximum of three modules in a term. A term is made up of 3 months of study and one week of final module examination. Each student shall spend an additional 6 to 9 months of supervised dissertation writing to fulfill the requirements for the MSc in ICTs for Development. Therefore, this study model provides the flexibility that enables you to complete the MSc in ICTs for Development Programme in 2 to 4 academic years depending on the pace that suits your schedule and learning goals.

MSc Dissertation in ICTs for Development (Mandatory)

  • Graduates from departments that traditionally have links with development of ICTs.
  • The programme is intended for University Degree graduates in the ICTs, and others who have an equivalent degree in the area.
  • Those with career trajectories in the NGO and public sectors, and in the private sector.
  • Graduates of any other degree who wish to understand how to apply ICTs in solving day-to-day problems such as project planning and management, stakeholder analysis, customer relationship management, communication, among others.
