ABOUT THE PROGRAMME

The Master of Information Systems and Technology (MIST) programme at NIU equips students with essential ICT skills to support sustainable development and financial inclusion, especially in developing economies. It offers a blend of theoretical and practical learning through 12 core course units, covering areas such as database systems, cybersecurity, cloud computing, and big data analytics. Delivered via a dynamic virtual platform, the programme includes interactive tutorials, live classes, and simulation tools. Students can choose electives and complete a dissertation based on original research. MIST develops professionals capable of planning, designing, and managing information systems and technologies in organizational contexts. Graduates are prepared for careers in ICT consultancy, data analysis, and information systems management, contributing to improved productivity and service delivery.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the MIST program, graduates will be able to:

  1. Define key terminology related to database management, network security, and software development methodologies, and list the stages of the systems development life cycle (SDLC).
  2. Apply database query languages (e.g., SQL) to retrieve and manipulate data from relational databases.
  3. Implement security measures to protect network systems from unauthorized access and utilise project management software to create project schedules.
  4. Analyse network traffic to identify potential security threats and vulnerabilities, the performance of a database system and identify areas for optimization.
  5. Evaluate the effectiveness of different information security policies and procedures, assess the suitability of various cloud computing platforms for specific business needs and critique the design and implementation of a software application based on usability and performance criteria.
  6. Design and develop a comprehensive information systems architecture for a given organizational scenario and create a secure and scalable cloud-based application.
  7. Develop a data analytics solution to extract meaningful insights from large datasets and create innovative IT strategic plan for an organisation.
  8. These goals, objectives, and learning outcomes ensure that graduates of the MIST programme at NIU are well-prepared to excel in their careers and contribute positively to their organisations and the broader business community.

The admission process is designed to identify candidates who demonstrate the potential for academic excellence, leadership, and professional growth. To be admitted to the NIU MIST programme, an applicant is required to possess:

  1. A minimum of lower second-class degree from a recognized institution in fields related to ICT, Natural Sciences, Statistics, Technology, Business, Social Sciences, and Development Studies.
  2. Adequate knowledge of computers, and access to a reliable computer and Internet connection, and preferably owning a laptop.
  3. A pass mark of 50 in the NIU Graduate Admission Test may be required.

CAREER PATH

Graduates of Master of Information Systems and Technology can work in organizations as Information Systems Managers, System Analysts, Data Analysts, ICT Consultants, among others. They can also be prospective candidates for PhD in Information Systems or PhD in Information Technology.
