ABOUT THE COURSE

The BSc in Public Health (BSPH) will be hosted by NIU’s School of Public Health and Health Sciences which has also developed the programme.

The vision of the School of Public Health and Health Sciences at NIU is to have students enrolled who by virtue of completing their degrees in public health, can succeed in various sectors of the economy and society.

The mission of the School is to provide the students with a high-quality Health and Health Science education equal to that provided by international institutions, which prepares them to become productive contributors and leaders in Africa and the world.


Values
Health and Health Science education at NIU is a very complex endeavour because of the interface of technology, professional and cultural values. Students will learn the standard body of professional material that is characteristic of the profession in the 21st century and be able to apply this body of material ethically and professionally in different cultural and community environments.

BACK GROUND

The BSPH Programme of Nexus International University is a unique three-year programme of 135 credit units, which admits Advanced level holders, Diploma and Higher National Diploma level graduates who have work experience in the health sector. The programme aims at building on the competences attained at work and/ or the Diploma level, which are career-centric or vocational into the Bachelor’s level where the graduate’s theoretical context, critical thinking and conceptual frames are essentially broadened and applied to refine and enhance their professional practices in health and Health Science. The programme features a variety of core modules that focus on issues that affect/influence population health such as the causes of disease (Epidemiology); the biological basis of disease (Nutrition, Microbiology etc); social and behavioural health (Sociology, Applied Social Studies, Politics/Community Development, Applied Public Health), Health Policy and Management as well as appropriate methods of both quantitative and qualitative research, including Biostatistics.  These courses will enable the student to leverage data to describe the extent of health conditions as well as identify effective avenues for disease diagnosis, prevention, health promotion and intervention. The programme is multidisciplinary in its approach, mirroring government health policies. Learners shall be facilitated to develop and demonstrate critical-thinking, problem-solving, communication skills, advanced understanding, and the integrity needed to produce successful outcomes as well as undertake leadership roles in a variety of settings in the health sector.

Programme Objectives

The overall aim of the programme is to provide students with a wide variety of insights into what constitutes health and wellbeing of populations such that they will be able to critically appraise health related research, policy and strategy. Specifically, students are introduced to a variety of subjects that:

Admission Requirements

Applicants for the BSPH programme shall be eligible for admission in the following ways:

a. Direct Entry Scheme

Applicants shall satisfy the general minimum entry requirements stipulated by National Council for Higher Education (NCHE). Candidates seeking admission through this avenue must have obtained: –

1. The Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) with at least six credits of which two credits must be in English and Mathematics.
2. The Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) with at least two Principal Passes obtained at the same sitting, which passes must include one of the following subjects: Biology, Mathematics, or Chemistry or its equivalence from UNEB or legitimate national authority.
3. Foreign students without UACE or its equivalent qualifications, who have completed secondary school education and are admissible to university degree or diploma programmes in their respective home countries. Such students shall have passed at least five subjects with a minimum overall grade of C (Plain). In addition, foreign students whose studies were not conducted in English shall show proof of proficiency in the English Language.

b. Diploma Entry Scheme
Candidates seeking admission through the Diploma holder’s Scheme must:
1. Have passed Mathematics and English with at least a credit in the Uganda Certificate of Education or its equivalent
2. Have done a combination involving Economics, Entrepreneurship, Geography, Agriculture, Mathematics at UACE and passed at least one of the subjects at Principle level

3. Have obtained a diploma or its equivalent qualification (at credit/distinction level) in the relevant field from a recognized higher institution of learning.

c. Mature Age Entry
The applicant must have passed Mature Age Entry Examinations (with at least 50%) of any institution dully authorized by the NCHE to issue such examination. For purposes of admission the Mature Age Entrance Certificate shall be valid for no more than two years. Eligibility for Admissions in Advanced Standing. This programme shall take on students who apply to be admitted in Advanced Standing. Those deemed to be eligible for admission in Advanced Standing shall possess the following:

1. One full academic year of studies in health or a related discipline with an official academic testimonial or transcript that shows a cumulative GPA of no less than 2.4/4 or its equivalence from a dully authorized programme and legally recognized tertiary institution.

2. Diploma of no less than two (2) full academic years of study or Higher National Diploma of no less than four (4) full academic years of study or National Certificate in Education or its equivalent qualification of no less than three full academic years of study in the discipline of health or related subject from a legally recognised tertiary institution with;

i. Evidence of one-year work experience in the business sector;

ii. An English Language Proficiency attestation (for those who did not study in English); and

iii. An Attestation or evidence of proficiency in use of Computer and Internet.
